Summer Festivals from Avignon to Perpignan

From photography to performing arts through a mix of different musical styles, from Avignon to Perpignan, culture will be calling this summer. The road from Nimes to Perpignan via Carcassonne and Avignon is simply strewn with exciting festivals. Let’s take a look at what’s in store!

Nimes Festival: 20th June - 21st July

Now here’s a festival to cater for all tastes! Nimes Festival has made the Arènes de Nîmes its home since 1997, and every summer offers a showcase of chanson française, heavy metal, international pop, new talent and legendary musicians alike. This 2017 edition offers an eclectic line-up with, amongst others, System of a Down, Renaud, Manu Chao, Rammstein, Ibrahim Maalouf, London Grammar and Placebo. So from 20th June to 21st July, get down to the Arènes de Nîmes!

Carcassonne Festival: 1st - 30th July

Carcassonne Festival is a celebration of music for everyone. Each summer in July the Medieval City puts on a stream of theatre, dance, shows and concerts. This year will see: a theatrical piece about the 10 commandments and a Béjart ballet, as well as music concerts by Vieilles Canailles (French trio Dutronc, Halliday and Mitchell), Christophe Maé, Michel Sardou and The Pixies, amongst many other things!

Carcassonne Festival - 1st to 30th July 2017 - Medieval City of Carcassonne - Individual tickets for each event; from €6 to €73. Tickets can be bought at the Cultural Centre Box Office. 

Worldwide Festival - Sète: 3rd - 9th July

For one week in July and now 10 years running, Worldwide Festival sparks up the nights in Sète. In honour of founder DJ Gilles Peterson, the festival gets visitors dancing for free on the beach all day and puts on paid concerts every night at the Théâtre de la Mer. An incredible line-up, including the likes of Motor City Drum Ensemble, The Cinematic Orchestra and Addison Groove, promises high energy throughout - so get yourself down to Sète from 3rd to 9th July 2017!

Les Rencontres d’Arles: 3rd July - 24th September

For nearly 50 years, Les Rencontres d’Arles has been an absolute must for all lovers of photography and brings together big names in the business, from those behind the lens to distributors and everyone in-between. For this 48th edition, it’s a global exploration. By heading to Arles from 3rd to 24th September, you’ll also set off on a voyage of discovery across the Syrian border, Ukraine, the banks of the Bosporus and contemporary Persia….

Avignon Festival: 6th - 26th July

Every year in July, the city of Avignon is abuzz with excitement. Avignon Festival is without doubt the most important manifestation of theatrical arts and live shows in France. Many works are commissioned specially for it. And where better a setting than the Palais des Papes to play host to this wonderful event? For its 71st edition, the Palais will welcome, amongst others, Satoshi Miyagi’s production of ‘Antigone’ and choreographer Isreal Galván’s work ‘La Fiesta’. 

Avignon Festival  – 6th to 26th July 2017 - Palais des Papes main courtyard, La FabriCa,  Cloître des Carmes, Cloître des Célestins, Théâtre Benoît-XII, as well as many other fantastic locations - Box Office opens Monday 12th June 2017.

Electrobeach Music Festival - Port Bacarès: 13th - 15th July

The Electrobeach Music Festival has been setting the summers on fire in Port Bacarès since 2009. Swiftly becoming one of the hottest festivals for electronic music in the South of France, its already seen performances by such names as David Guetta, Hardwell, Afrojack, and Markus Schulz… Starting out as a 1-day festival, it now spreads over three days and three stages, offering an eclectic line-up of electronic music. This year, Eric Prydz will headline the main stage on July 13th.

Visa pour l’Image - Perpignan: 2nd - 17th September

From 2nd to 17th September 2017, Perpignan will host the 28th international photojournalism festival, Visa pour l’Image. This year, more than 20 free exhibitions give the public the chance to discover the visual reports of photojournalists from across the globe. There will also be open-air screenings, events with photographers, and plenty of other amazing photojournalism activities!
